History 1908-2006
The Oamaru Amateur Swimming Club (OASC) was formed in 1908 when the Oamaru baths were situated near the present gas works. OASC played an important part in the promotion of swimming in the North Otago district, and through the efforts of Volunteer coaches over the years; many hundreds of people are now able to swim. Competitively, the club has produced many fine swimmers! Initially the formation of the Otago Country Club Championships in 1936 gave swimmers competition in Dunedin. This competition continued for over 30 years until the formation of the Eastern Districts Region which then gave Oamaru swimmers the opportunity to compete with Ashburton, Timaru, and many other districts. More recently in August 2002, after the formation of the Waitaki Aquatic Centre, a coaching service was provided and started out with four swimmers & one coach. This was because it was recognised that there was no system in place for Oamaru children to pursue swimming as a serious competitive sport, once they had reached their full potential in the Waitaki Aquatic Centres Style & Stroke Swim School or the Oamaru Amateur Swimming Club program. The Waitaki Aquatics Swim Team is now affiliated to the Oamaru Amateur Swimming Club, working as one in the name of competitive swimming. In the short time the swim team has been running our numbers have risen from four to seventy swimmers. We are also very proud that in our short time of “Striving for excellence” We have produced six swimmers who finished in the top 10 of their age at New Zealand National Swimming level.
Oamaru Amateur Swim Club welcomes your enquiries about our swimming programmes - we look forward to hearing from you! |
